Thanksgiving is a time for giving thanks and spending time with family over a nice dinner. Write about your most unforgettable meal.

Prompt Response: My most unforgettable Thanksgiving meal was when my whole family was together, and the food was extra yummy because everyone was having a good time and being happy. Summary: I typed that response because the meal was special with my family. Reflection: This meal reminded me that being together makes any dinner with your whole family meaningful.

As Celie’s world expands in these letters, she begins noticing new things about the people in her life. Write about a moment when you suddenly noticed something funny, shocking, or unexpected about someone you see every day (a family member, a classmate, or even a teacher). How did that new discovery change the way you saw them?

Prompt Response: I noticed something surprising about one of my friends, they were funnier than I thought and more creative with their words. Summary: Learning this showed me a different side of them. Reflection: It changed how I saw them.

These letters show how Celie learns from the people around her, even in small ways. Think of someone in your life who influences you in a positive, everyday way—a friend, relative, teacher, or teammate. Write about what you’ve learned from them and how their influence shows up in your daily life.

Prompt Response: A person who has influenced me is my cousin. They teach me patience because my own patience runs out quickly, and also through how they behave. Summary: Their positive habits show me how to stay calm in certain situations. Reflection: Their behavior often arises in my daily life when I take a second to think before I act.

Creating a video is more than just placing pictures together—it’s about capturing a feeling. Explain how you tried to bring your assigned letter to life in your Adobe Express video. What mood were you aiming for, and how did your editing choices help you communicate the message or emotion of the letter?

Prompt Response: I attempted to bring my letter to life by using music that matches the letter and transitions to match. Summary: My goal was to create a thoughtful atmosphere when trying to communicate the emotions from the letter. Reflection: I realized how important it is when trying to communicate emotions with pictures instead of actual words.

At the end of Letter 21, Celie and Sofia share a rare moment of laughter that softens the tension between them. Write about a time when you and a sibling or family member shared an unexpected moment of joy after things had been tense or confusing. Explain how that moment helped bring you closer.

Prompt Response: Celie and Sofia share a moment of laughter that breaks the tension between them and helps them feel close. Summary: A small joke helps them relax and connect after things went wrong. Reflection: I somewhat had a moment like that before with one of my family members. We argued, then laughed it off and went back to being cool.

Celie tells Harpo to “beat” Sofia because she believes that’s how men control women, but this advice causes pain and conflict. Think about a time when someone gave you advice that sounded right at first but ended up being wrong. How did it affect your situation or relationships? What lesson did you learn about thinking for yourself?

Prompt Response: Celie's advice to Harpo caused more harm than help. It shows how following the wrong advice can damage relationships. Summary: Celie to Harpo to beat Sofia because she thinks that's normal, but it only creates conflict and pain; it makes their relationship worse than better. Reflection: I have taken advice that sounded good but ended up being wrong and made my situation worse instead of better.

Letters 11–16 show how relationships can be full of misunderstanding and pressure. Harpo wants love, but he also wants power. Sofia wants freedom, not control. Reflect on a time when someone’s desire for control hurt a friendship or relationship. What advice would you give to Harpo or Sofia if you could?

Prompt Response: Harpo wants love, but he also wants to feel powerful. Sofia wants freedom and refuses to be controlled by anyone, especially a man. Their disagreements show how a desire for control can damage a relationship. Summary: Harpo tries to make Sofia act the way he thinks a wife "should" even though she is strong and independent. Reflection: Someone wanted to control a relationship, and it created stress and distance, making the relationship unbalanced.

In letters 6 -10, we see how Celie starts noticing the strength of people around her, like Shug Avery’s independence and confidence. Think about someone in your life who inspires you to be stronger or more confident. What qualities do they have that you admire and try to learn from?

Prompt Response: Celie begins to notice the strength and independence of people around her. Summary: During these letters, Celie's life continues to be filled with hardship and abuse, but we start to see moments of change. Reflection: Someone who inspires me to be stronger is my mom. She always stands up for herself and the people she loves. She works hard and doesn't give up easily, and carries herself with pride no matter what.

After reading the first five letters of The Color Purple, reflect on your thoughts and emotions as you experienced Celie’s early voice and struggles.

Prompt Response: Reading Celie's early letters made me feel kind of mad because its difficult to imagine someone so young face such cruelty and having no one to protect her. Summary: Her voice is raw and deeply painful. She writes directly to god because she has no one else to turn to. Through her letters I leaarned about the abuse from her father and the loss of her children. Reflection: Her voice teaches me about resilience, and the power of expression. Even though her life is full of pain, writing becomes her way to surviving.
